Local directories: which ones are worth it

6 min

Not all directories are equal for local SEO. High domain authority directories with genuine editorial curation strengthen your NAP citations and reputation. Low-quality directories, on the other hand, can hurt your link profile or simply produce no effect. Concentrate your efforts on twenty quality sources rather than a hundred generic directories.

The proliferation of online directories makes the choice difficult. Some have been pillars of local SEO for more than ten years. Others have no audience, no authority and may be considered link spam. Knowing how to distinguish between the two categories saves significant time and effort.

The criteria of a quality directory

Before registering on a directory, check its domain authority (DA or DR depending on the tool), its estimated organic traffic and the presence of genuine editorial moderation. A directory that accepts any registration without verification will have little positive impact.

Thematic or geographic relevance is an additional criterion: a directory specialized in your sector (health, construction, catering) or dedicated to your region transmits a stronger relevance signal than a low-quality general directory.

  • Significant domain authority (DR above 40 as an indicative benchmark).
  • Real estimated organic traffic, not zero.
  • Editorial moderation or manual validation of registrations.
  • Thematic or geographic relevance to your activity.
  • Presence of your established competitors on this directory.

Priority directories for all sectors

A set of high-authority general directories deserves to be covered as a priority for any local establishment, regardless of sector.

These reference sources are regularly crawled by Google and constitute trusted citations that validate the consistency of your NAP data.

  • Yelp: international authority, visible in Google results.
  • Bing Places: GBP equivalent on Microsoft's search engine, often overlooked.
  • Apple Maps Connect: captures iPhone users searching locally.
  • Better Business Bureau: trusted authority for US businesses.
  • Chamber of Commerce directories: strong local authority and trust signals.

Sector-specific directories to prioritize

Beyond the general base, each sector has specific directories with their own user community and authority. These sector registrations are often more valuable than ten additional general registrations.

Identify the two or three reference directories in your sector by analyzing the link profiles of your best-ranked competitors. The sources common to the strongest competitors are almost always the citations to target as a priority.

Businesses present on at least 5 reference sector directories record on average 20 to 35% more Google Maps directions requests according to 2025-2026 observations.

What to avoid

Automated submission services to hundreds of directories in a few hours produce low-quality registrations, often inconsistent and difficult to update later. Google has largely devalued this type of signal.

Also avoid directories that sell dofollow links without editorial relevance to your activity: they can create an artificial link signal detectable in a link profile analysis and potentially penalizing.

FAQ

Can a free directory be as valuable as a paid one?

Yes, cost does not determine citation quality. Yelp has a free option and remains a highly valued citation. What matters is the authority, traffic and relevance of the directory, not its business model.

Should you regularly update your directory registrations?

NAP data must be verified after every change of address, phone number or name. For the rest, an annual check of the main registrations is sufficient to ensure no data has been altered by a third party or an update algorithm.

Do reviews left on directories influence Google local SEO?

Indirectly. Google may aggregate them as external reputation signals, but they carry less weight than native GBP reviews. They remain useful for your overall reputation and for users who discover you through these platforms.
